How to customize your content options in Wordpress

Overview

Content Options help you modifying how your content can be displayed in several themes.

Go to My siteCustomizeContent Options in the dashboard.

The following video will show you a quick overview of how it works. Please scroll down for more specific information.

Customize content

Blog Display

You can have choices between showing an excerpt on the blog and category, tag, and date archive pages, as well as search results or showing full content of each post.

In case you want to have more tags manually in each post, ensure that you selected Full post. You post will be broken wherever you set the tag.

Default Blog Display

In some themes, “default” display option can be chosen so that the theme will kep its default blog display settings. This is because some specific themes’ displays will show an excerpt or the full post depends on the post format of the post.

For instance, a theme normally displays posts with Quote post format as the full post by default so that a quote is never be truncated. Besides, other post formats such as Standard will always display the Quote post format as an excerpt. By selecting Default, the theme will make the decisions for you.

Author Bio

You might opt to show the name and bio of the posts’ author on the single post view in the support themes. This information is taken from the information of the author at https://wordpress.com/me and the author’s Gravatar picture. If you want to hide author bio, please deselect the box.

Post Details

This Post details section help you to show or hide things related to the post such as: categories, tags, date, author’s name. Deselect the box if you want to hide any of these elements. Please remember that certain themes will not display all of these elements.

Post detail

You can select if you want to display single posts or pages in the supported themes. You can opt to display featured images on blog and archive pages that include category, tag, date archives and search-results pages. Deselect the box next to each item if you want to hide featured images in any of these views.

Automatically Use First Image in Post

You can also choose the Feature Image as the first image in your post o gallery by selecting Automatically use first image in post. You also can select to manually set a Feature Image for a post by deselect this box.

Frequently Asked Questions

I don no see the Content Options panel in my Customizer.

Most newer themes support Content Options, but not every theme does.

I am missing the Blog Display/ Author Bio/Post Details sections in my Customizer’s Content Options panel.

Some themes support only specific Content Options Settings. For instance, grid-based themes like Cubic and Dyad do not display the full post.

I have an image and a video imbed in my post but they are not displayed in the excerpt.

Links, auto-embeds, links or other elements which rely on HTML code are not displayed by automatic excerpts. With images and links, you can turn them to HTML view and copy out the section you want to use and then paste it in to a custom excerpt. You can imbed videos by utilizing imbed shortcode instead.

My theme has an author bio but I cannot turn it off through Content Options.

Some themes, such as Twenty Sixteen, have an author bio section on every posts which is coded in a way incompatible with Content Option Settings. You have to utilize custom CSS to hide the bio in those themes, other themes will have different methods to hide the bio in Theme Options.

I selected “Display categories” but I do not see any categories on the blog page.

Some themes display categories on the blog page, some display only on single post. You cannot make categories display in those themes.

Some of the themes display categories when there are published posts in more than one category. You can try to add a second category to a published post.

If I hide the featured image on single post or page, will it still be used when sharing the post or page on social media, like Facebook?
