When you sign up a domain with WordPress.com, we point it to your WordPress.com blog. But you do not have to use it that way – you can make your domain point to any site that you desire. In this guide, we will take a look at How to change name servers on your site to help you know more deeply about this topic.

It seems that you want to move your site to another host, we advise you to transfer your domain to a new host so that both your domain and your hosting are managed in the similar place. In some cases though, this option may be unavailable. For instance, if you just signed up your domain, you will not be able to transfer it for 60 days. Moreover, some hosts simply do not support domain registration transfers.

You are able to point your domain to your new host even if you’re not able to transfer the registration, by changing the domain’s name servers.

How to change name servers on your site

What Is A Name Server

Have you ever heard the term "nameserver"? The fact is that "name server" and "nameserver" have the same meaning. But exactly what is a name server? Let's think of a phonebook. If you were to give me a phone call, you will need to know my phone number. Then, you will want to search it in your phonebook or wherever before trying to guess it. Same thing applies to domain names and the internet as a whole.

A name server receives your domain name and then translates it into an IP ( which is internet protocol) address such as 2.50.35.42, which is like the phone number your computer needs to request for a web page. Name servers are part of a Domain Name System (DNS) which is like a computer's phonebook. Were it not for the DNS, we would have to chock up our minds with an IP address of all the websites we have an intention of visiting.

Here are some steps that the entire process has to get through:

  • You feed a domain name into the address bar on your web browser, for instance, _onelineshop.com_

  • Your computer makes use of DNS to search the name servers for webaddress.com

  • _ns1.webaddress.com_ and _ns2.webaddress.com_ are retrieved as the nameservers for the domain.

  • Your computer requests for the IP address from the nameservers

  • Once it’s submitted, your computer sends a request to the IP address, including the exact page you want to reach.

  • The web server hosting _www.onlineshop.com_ sends the requested page to your web browser
