Overview
When in need, your ownership can be transferred from a domain to another WordPress.com administrator on your site or another site of yours. Otherwise, when your domain is bought from WordPress.com, it can be transferred to another registrar (this is the place in which you buy and sell domains).
Note: No one but the custom domain’s owner can do this action. All of the admin users on a site can see domains connected to the site at My Site(s) Domains, but the action of transferring the domain to another site can only be performed by the domain owner. The act of transferring ownership of the domain will lead to the fact that you do not have the access to the domain’s settings anymore, you also no longer can cancel, renew or transfer it. It is the new owner that has the ability to perform those actions.
Transfer Domain to Another Administrator on the Site
Step 1: Insert the new owner as an Administrator
You are only able to transfer a domain to another admin on the same site so you need to add the new owner as an admin in case they have not been the one yet. This action can be done by following: My Site > People > Add
.
Sometimes, the new owner is a non-admin contributor on the site already, their role can be changed by: My Site > People > Team
. The domain only can be transferred if the new admin accepts the invitation.
More specific information about adding users can be found here
